Suspected gunman arrested in NYC shooting of Denmark tourist

Police said on Tuesday that the man who allegedly shot a Danish tourist in a swindle on the Upper West Side has been arrested.

According to the police, 36-year-old Narad Helles was arrested by the police on Monday and charged with attempt to murder, assault, attempted robbery, criminal possession of weapons and reckless endangerment.

Heales is accused of walking up to a 31-year-old tourist at West 103 Street and West End Avenue at around 3.30 a.m. on Sunday and demanding to turn on his cellphone.

According to the police, the tourist, who was on his way back to a hostel in the city after leaving a party, went bald and kept walking.

Police said Hales allegedly shot the tourist in the back and took away.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where he is expected to recover.

Court documents show that the accused gunman was arrested late last month on grand-larceny charges after he allegedly swiped the cell phone of a man he slept on August 10 while riding the subway in Queens was.

According to the criminal complaint, Hales was busted when the sleeping straphanger woke up, noticed his phone was missing and asked the MTA conductor’s cell to borrow a call to his number.

Narad Hellas allegedly demanded the tourist to hand over his cellphone before shooting him.


According to the criminal complaint, when the victim dialed his phone, he saw the stolen device in Hales’ back pocket ringing and burning.

The victim chased Hellas to get his phone back and took a picture of the alleged thief to hand over to the police.

Police said there have also been three other run-ins with the police for Helles’ alleged theft.
