His fans were in tears as David Jason appeared this morning talking about his late friend John Challis.
The 81-year-old Del Boy actor starred alongside Boysy Starr in Only Fools and Horses for more than two decades.
Yesterday it was revealed that John had died “sleeping peacefully” from cancer at the age of 79.
A devastated David appeared on the day’s hit TODAY, telling Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “We’re still dealing with a bit of a blowout I’m afraid.”
He said that John’s health had taken a dramatic turn, as friends had hoped that he would recover.
David explained: “It was not entirely surprising because poor old John had not been well for the past month or two. But it looked like he went down so fast.
“One minute we were thinking he was on his way to recovery. Sadly it took him pretty fast. We’re still feeling a little bit of a jolt I’m afraid.”
He also spoke about his skills in the role of Boysy, the mean spirited second hand car dealer on Only Fools.
David explained: “The things I always measure an actor by is the difference between how they are in real life and the role they play.
“Sometimes it’s a little surprising to people that John Challis was such a kind and simply lovable kind of person. Very different from the character Boycey he played.
“A lot of people thought that was John. It wasn’t, it goes to show the skill that he had in portraying Boyce as an actor.
“It was completely against his natural nature.”
A fan posted a crying emoji after a heartbreaking interview, writing: “David Jason such a real person and John Challis playing Boyce a match made combination with Marlene! RIP Mr Challis!! . “
Another wrote: “David Jason getting all emotional – I absolutely love this guy. With David Attenborough.”
Another wrote: “David Jason is a national treasure. Long live the Del Boy.”
