On his debut against Aston Villa in September and in his most recent game at Watford, Nigge was hooked at half-time.

But with Ben Chilwell, 24, injured and Marcos Alonso, 30, Chelsea’s only other recognized wing-back, Tuchel said the Spaniard has been tested in defense.

He added: “I think he can play a wing-back role.

“We do that sometimes in training, so we get the impression that he might be a good fit. Maybe in the next games we’ll have to try it.”

Nigge, 27, has played in the left side of midfield before, but never in the backline.

He is the centre-back. Was dropped for 37-year-old Thiago Silva on Vicarage Road with22-year-old Trevoh Chaloba moved into midfield as Chelsea eventually won 2-1.

But later Boss Tuchel questioned his performance.

He added: “I don’t know where he goes with this performance but he was on the yellow card so we had two options.

“We could have removed Marcos, who also had the yellow card, and tried Saul as a wing-back.

“I had this in my mind before the game, if anything had happened to Marcos.

“But I thought maybe it wasn’t the right match to try things out with new positions, so it was [subbing] To get him to change shape a bit and to keep Thiago on the pitch with his event.

“That’s more physical than Trevo being at number six – unfortunately Trevo injured himself and we ended up with Reuben on a solo six.

“But it was a tactical decision.”
