Tom Morello says a famous metal guitarist was once disappointed to learn he was Black

Tom Morello recalls a time when a famous metal guitarist who wanted to meet him was disappointed to learn that Rage Against the Machine guitarist was Black.

talking to IndependentMorello, who released his latest album ‘The Atlas Underground Fire’ today (October 15), said he often meets people who don’t understand he’s not white, including fans of his music .

Recalling one particular incident, Morello said that he was once backstage at a show for “a famous metal band” and his guitarist wanted to meet him. However, it became clear that this person did not really know what a rez guitarist looked like.


The metal musician walked right by Morello and introduced himself to “this big white man with long hair”, thinking it was him. When he realized his mistake, Morello said that the man looked at her “in utter despair”.

“They couldn’t imagine a brown-skinned rock and roll guitar player,” he said. “[Fans who] Let’s say I’m white and it can be uncomfortable to find out differently. They go mad: ‘You’re not!’ It’s very disturbing for them.”

Back in March, Morello was reprimanded by a Twitter user who accused the guitarist of using “white man privilege” to defend his friendship with Ted Nugent—despite his controversial right-wing views.

Coming back with the simplest ripostes, Morello simply wrote: “I’m not blonde”.


Earlier this month, Morello praised British duo Nova Twins, calling them “one of my favorite bands” and saying they are “an incredible band that deserves to be huge.”

Meanwhile, Morello’s sons Roman and Nandi Buschelle sing ‘The Children Will Rise Up!’ A song dedicated to implementing change amid the climate emergency.
