A Conservative lawmaker has been criticized for suggesting that anyone using the term “white privilege” notify the Home Office as an extremist.
Granthshala We have obtained a leaked recording in which Jonathan Gullis says anti-racism campaigners using the term should refer to the government’s “prevention” program – which is to track down potential terrorists.
Mr Gullis, who made the remarks in front of an invited audience of Tory activists at an event late last week, was labeled “dangerously authoritarian” and urged his remarks to be withdrawn.
During a Question Hour session outside his party’s convention, Mr Gullis, who until recently sat on Parliament’s education committee, also said that pro-Labour teachers who criticize the Tories should be sacked.
He told activists, “The word white privilege – very quickly – is an extremist term, it should be reported to PREVENT, because it is an extremist ideology.”
“It’s really racist to suggest everyone who is white in any way is privileged.”
The Home Office’s prevention program was established to combat violent extremism and prevent people from being sympathetic to terrorism – but has been criticized for restricting freedom of expression and institutionalizing anti-Muslim racism.
Mr Gullis, speaking at an event organized by the Conservative Friends of Education, said: “I hope [using the term white privilege] Will be reported, I hope it will be looked into, and any teacher who maintains it in the classroom should eventually face at least a disciplinary hearing.”
Speaking at the same event, the Stoke MP promised “results” for left-wing teachers, telling the audience: “The second way we can stop the cancel culture is by actually telling leftist lecturers and awakened left teachers – who seem To be more and more clear – what’s going to happen, ultimately, are going to have consequences for you if you’re going to push your ideology into the classroom.”
He continued: “For some reason if a member of the Labor Party wants to stand in front of the class and say how bad and bad the Tories are, the headmaster has to take some kind of sympathetic view of that. It’s absolutely disgusting, We need to sack those who advance our political ideology.”
Labor MP Don Butler told Granthshala: “For a Member of Parliament and recent member of the Education Select Committee to show such ignorance is as alarming as it is dangerous.
“To emphasize that anyone using the term white privilege should refer to a counter-terrorism course is not only bizarre, it is dangerously authoritarian and from a dystopian philosophy.
“Jonathan Gullis should immediately withdraw his remarks and apologize for his insensitive and clearly offensive remarks.”
White privilege is the idea that a person who is white benefits from inherent advantages in a society where racism exists
Mr Gullis is far from the first Conservative MP to make extreme comments on the topic of anti-racism.
Her MP aide Tom Hunt has previously claimed that the Black Lives Matter movement seeks to dismantle the family, while Suella Braverman has referred to the “Cultural Marxism” conspiracy theory.
