Former President Donald Trump sued the House select committee investigating the rebellion on January 6 that he instigated in an effort to prevent the release of documents.

The lawsuit comes as the committee plans to vote to hold former Trump adviser Steve Bannon in contempt for not testifying after Mr Trump told him not to do so. The committee also summoned former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows as well as his social media colleague Dan Scavino.

Mr Trump said in a statement that the investigation was meant to silence “America First Patriots” and called the investigation illegitimate.

“The January 6 committee is a partisan sham to distract Americans from the policies of Democrats that are killing and robbing Americans,” Trump communications director Taylor Budovich said in a statement.

The lawsuit also blames President Joe Biden for failing to claim executive privilege for the documents requested by the committee.

The legal team’s argument claimed that the committee’s request served no legislative purpose, that former presidents have constitutional rights of privilege and that the National Archives and Records Administration has not had time to organize the requested document.

“The committee is not seeking the truth, it is seeking communist-style political persecution of President Trump and America’s First Patriots, who honorably served their country,” Mr. Budovich said in the statement.
