Two Scarborough hotels evacuated as guests told ‘get out quickly in bomb scare’

Police have evacuated vacationers and surrounded two hotels over a suspected “bomb threat”.

Guests staying at The Grand Hotel and a travelogue in Scarborough have been kicked out of the hotel by police.

Officials reportedly told customers that they could “be stuck in their rooms all day long” if they don’t leave.

Several police vans have reached the historic hotel and a large number of policemen are present at the spot.

A huge circle has been built around the seaside buildings in Scarborough.

According to yorkshire live Employees of The Grand are reportedly told that bomb disposal squads are visiting the site.

One guest said: “All roads are closed. We don’t know what happened, but we were told that if we didn’t leave now, we could be in our rooms all day.

“They’re asking everyone to wait by the Royal Hotel on the corner.

“Everyone had to get out; we’ve only been told it was a police incident. They’ve blocked all access to the Grand.”

A resident who lived in the McBean building next to The Grand said they were also evacuated.

Police have not told them why they have been evicted or how long they will be out of their homes.

Another holidaymaker said: “We’re sitting at Weatherpoon in front of hotels, we’re not allowed to go back to hotels.

“Nobody knows what’s going on, we think it’s a bomb scare – they’re waiting for the bomb squad.

“But the police have cordoned off the roads, so we are sitting here waiting as we had to check out at 12.

The hotel and surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.

“But we can’t reach our car, we can’t reach our room, we can’t reach anywhere.

“They’ve vacated The Grand and The Travelodge and I think Royal too.

“We were in the hotel room and the fire alarm went off and they said ‘you need to go out and wait for the Royal Hotel’, no one told us anything so it was. So we don’t know when we’ll be back will be let go.”

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Emergency services are currently present at the ongoing incident at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough.

“The hotel and surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precaution and the area around the hotel, including St. Nicholas Cliff and the Spa Bridge, has been closed to allow emergency service to attend.

“Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.”
