Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a bus on Friday while traveling to a market in Bandiagara, 10 km from Songho village.

The villages are located in the middle of the Mopti region, the epicenter of violence in Mali by rebels affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

“The United States strongly condemns the attack on civilians near Bandigara, Mali, which killed 31 and injured 17 on Saturday,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a written statement.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the people of Mali and will continue to partner with them in their pursuit of a secure, prosperous and democratic future,” Price said.
