As the US men’s national team competes in its first World Cup since Brazil in 2014, a chant from American fans is raising some eyebrows.

On Monday evening, as the Stars and Stripes faced Wales, fans chanted, “It’s called football! It’s called football!” A crackdown on America’s insistence on using its own name for the sport virtually everyone calls it football.

a clip Chants posted to Fox Soccer’s TikTok account for former NFL player Chad Ochocinco Johnson have been viewed nearly 700,000 times, though some football/soccer fans weren’t feeling it.

A commenter below the video said, “The US should be banned from playing in the World Cup.”

“Ask them the meaning of FIFA,” said another, apparently referring to football governing body the Federation Internationale de Football Association.

While his chants aren’t doing him any favors, the World Cup so far has brought American fans some joy.

In their opening Group B match against Wales at Al Rayyan’s Ahmed Ali Stadium, the young American team took an early lead with a goal from Timothy Weah, although veteran striker Gareth Bale later equalized for the Dragons with a penalty.

American fans aren’t the only ones playing out the great “soccer” vs. “football” debate.

An ad campaign for Fritole features great soccer players like Mia Hamm, David Beckham, and Brandi Chastain, as well as other athletes like former NFL-er Peyton Manning, debating the right name for the beautiful sport.
