The attack comes as offense – as well as ridership – on the transit system return to pre-pandemic levels.

Last week, police reported 60 incidents of serious crimes compared to 33 in the same week in 2020, when NYC saw a historically low subway population.

There has been a 27 percent increase in felonies on the subway so far this year compared to 2019, a more accurate comparison of times based on ridership rather than 2020, NYPD data shows.

According to police data, there have been 408 serious attacks so far this year as compared to 313 in 2019.

Misconduct attacks, however, are roughly the same percentage less.
