Virginia police have taken a suspect into custody after a high school shooting on Monday left at least four people injured, including two victims.

In an earlier update to reporters, Chief Steve Drew said police responded to reports of a shooting at around 11:38 p.m. The scene was “chaotic” when officers arrived.

Police confirmed that they rushed four or five persons to the hospital, but only two of them had bullet wounds. Doctors believe gunshot wounds are not life-threatening. A 17-year-old man had injuries on the side of his face and a 17-year-old woman had a lower leg.

Police recovered evidence but did not specify the nature of the evidence. Police have yet to reveal the identity of the shooter, but Drew confirmed that police believe the shooter and victim knew each other.

The school informed the parents that they could meet their children on the tennis court.

“Closely monitoring horrific reports of a shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-VA, tweeted. “We look forward to learning more while praying for the health and safety of all those involved.”

The FBI field office in Norfolk is providing assistance to Newport News police in connection with the shooting, an agent confirmed to Granthshala News. However, the Newport Police remains the principal agent on this.

Drew told reporters that state troops would also help with the investigation. Troopers and FBI agents will do a thorough painting of the campus and buildings.

Drew appreciated the cooperation of students and teachers within the building during the evacuation.
