Customers of a Walmart store in Louisiana were in for a surprise announcement recently when an employee announced his resignation over the store’s loudspeaker.
She also called out the management for misbehaving with the employees and accused a manager of disorderly behaviour.
Beth McGrath, who works in the electronics section of the store, posted a video of her public resignation announcement on Facebook on September 14. The video went viral and has garnered over 175,000 views in the past week.
“Attention Walmart shoppers and associates, my name is Beth from Electronics,” Ms. McGrath began at the store’s PA system. “I’ve been working at Walmart for about five years and all I can say is that everyone here works more and gets paid less. The attendance policy is bull**t. We’re treated to [sic] Management and customers are bad every day. Whenever we have a problem with it, we are told we are replaceable,” said Ms. McGrath.
“I’m tired of the constant gaslighting,” she said. “This company treats its elderly colleagues like a**t. To our store manager Jared, you are a pervert. Greta and Cathy, shame on you for treating our colleagues like you. I hope so That you won’t talk to your families the way you do to us.”
She ended with: “Managing the f**k and this job of the f**k. I quit.”
The video received widespread praise, with many social media users applauding her courage to stand up for herself. But some commentators also questioned his professionalism.
Ms McGrath posted another video a few days later, thanking people for their overwhelming support and explaining the reasons behind her action.
“I never intended to blow up the video the way I did,” she wrote in the new post. “It’s been an emotional roller coaster for me and I’m just at a loss for words.”
“I didn’t record the video for Dabangg,” she said. “I recorded videos for my fellow co-workers, to let them know that I love them and that I want what’s best for them. I wanted to be their voice, I wanted to be my voice.”
She said: “I am overwhelmed by everyone’s support. If I could get any advice from this it would be ‘Don’t be afraid to speak your peace, even if it tears you down at first’.
