Celebrating their pearl anniversary, the beloved couple – who have two children, Emily, 27, and Charlie, 25 – enjoyed dinner and a ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet at the London Opera House.

“It was a wonderful evening where Sue and I completed 30 years of a wonderful marriage by doing a lot of the things that we love most, one of the best ballets we’ve ever seen,” Alex said. Metro.

“Thankfully, our love story ends better than Romeo and Juliet’s. We’re still star-crossed lovers, though. “

The love and laughter has never been rarer for Sue and Alex, who have seized each day together since picking Lucky Number Two over Lynn from Middlesex and Kate from Essex.

“Dear Sue was, looking absolutely beautiful,” Alex said, recalling the loving moment when their eyes first met, which was eventually viewed by over 10 million people.

“My feet were trembling,” clung to Sue, when she first met her adorable husband.

“We had to sit on these big stools and there was this big banging sound coming from the other side of the screen, which was fascinating.

“All I could think was ‘I hope he’s taller than me’ because I have this thing that boyfriends are taller than girlfriends.”

Thankfully, for Sue, the screen peeled back to reveal 6’2″ gentleman Alex, who simply climbed up on her.

“My initial reaction was ‘tick the box,'” she joked.

“He was great fun and he enjoyed my answers, so I knew we were going to have a good time.”

Directed from ITV studios in London, his counterpart was immediately flown to Shannon in Ireland, where he attended a medieval banquet and enjoyed the Cliffs of Moher.

Upon his return to the capital, Silla had to proceed directly to filming to make his final decision.

still going strong

With both sides giving a resounding ‘yes’ to the late presenter, Alex asked Sue teasing her plans for the rest of the day: “We were more than just holding hands by the end of the day.”

Alex and Sue spent the next two years in a long-distance relationship, with the pair devoting their weekends to each other.

Eventually, Alex mustered up the courage to ask that all-important question — and the rest is history.

In 1991, with matchmaker Silla, Alex and Sue were married in a ceremony that was witnessed by a staggering 17m people for a blind date special.

Alex concluded, “The most important thing is that we take care of each other and enjoy whatever life throws at us after 30 years of happy marriage.”

“We’ve had a happy marriage – even though life has thrown many things like ours – but generally, our philosophy is to hold hands and laugh at life and it will all be well.”
