The announcement of the Nobel Prizes will begin on Monday.
Nobel prize season is upon us once again. Each October, committees in Sweden and Norway nominate for various prizes in science, literature and economics as well as peace work. In total, six prizes will be awarded.
Like everything, Nobel is adjusting to the pandemic. Last year, some events were canceled in favor of a digital ceremony for the winners. The Oslo ceremony for the Peace Prize was smaller than in most years with limited audiences.
This year’s festivities will be a mix of digital and physical events. The organization said the awardees would receive Nobel Prize medals and diplomas in their country in December.
Here’s a quick guide to this year’s awards.
What are the rewards?
Six Nobel Prizes are awarded each year, each in recognition of an individual or organization’s unprecedented contribution to a specific field. Awards are given for physiology or medicine, physics, chemistry, economic science, literature and peace work, which often receive the most attention due to the potential of the nominees and groups.
There are 329 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, Nobel committee said. Here’s how those enrollments work.
Former Nobel Peace Prize laureates include Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai (2014), former President Barack Obama (2009), Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk (1993), the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso (1989) and Mother Teresa (1979).
When are the awards announced?
An award will be announced each day from October 4 to October 8 and again on October 11 between 5:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time. Announcements are made in Stockholm and Oslo, and will be streamed live Official digital channel of the Nobel Prize.
