between seasons

It can be a tricky season to dress up: Too early for celebration, but a little injection of fun for the cold and gloomy. Solution? Somewhere between a novelty Christmas jumper—not my style—and a practical plain knit, let’s hear it out for the timeless Fair Isle sweater.

haute heritage

Please note that I am using the term ‘Fair Isle’ loosely. True Fair Isle is made only on one of the Shetland Islands and uses a limited palette of five colors. It is an ancient craft that has been passed down and fiercely defended for generations – Chanel ‘borrowed’ a design from a local artist a few years ago and was forced to apologize.

ruling the runway

No doubt Balenciaga, Lowe and Molly Goddard have been careful not to make the same mistake, putting similar patterns front and center in their winter collections. It’s these brightly colored designs from Goddard that are at the top of my wish list.

The London-born designer paired the traditional knit with her trademark tulle party frock (remember that pink dress in the hit BBC series Killing Eve?) splendidly bonkers, this is what I’d wear to a Christmas party if I had the confidence and budget.

mix your prints

Luckily the High Street has a more affordable selection. If you’re not going to wear your dress over a statement party dress, try it with your favorite floral midi – prints clash now. Or dress it up with jeans. It’s equally easy with a practical blue pair or the impractical but brilliant white flares that I’m wearing here.
