A woman was killed after the vehicle she was driving fell into a river and swam dangerously close to the brink of Niagara Falls.

New York State Park Police confirmed they were called before 12 noon on Wednesday when the car got stuck in rapids less than 100 meters from the American side.

Police said they determined from eyewitnesses that there was a person in the vehicle and an emergency operation was launched.


Officials said a diver was deboarded from the cruising helicopter, climbed into the car and pulled out the body of the lone person in it.

Police said a woman aged 60 and a local resident of the area was declared brought dead.

Police said they were not able to confirm at this time as to why the vehicle fell into the river.

New York State Park Police Said Canadian Coast Guard He was also called in connection with the investigation.

The roads in the area were slippery due to light snowfall at the time of the incident.
